Years ago I picked up a cheap monoprice drawing tablet, with grand intentions of learning to draw- clearly the lack of a tablet was the only thing holding me back. Into the closet it went, to make an appearance for repacking or occasionally trotted out as a ‘Hey, we could totally use this!’ but never done. I’ve been playing around with Krita and trying to expand my creativity, so back out comes the glorious tablet of old! Well, being now nearly 10 years old, I was worried about so many parts that could have failed me… the AAA battery in the pen, the USB Mini connector, drivers, software support… Shockingly, I plugged it in, put a new battery in (no leaks, yay), plugged it in to my mac and it came up as a drawing tablet. Pretty quickly I found that it had no pressure sensitivity out of the box, but it was working! I hit up Monoprices site to fetch the ancient drivers, installed them, then quickly backed out as nothing worked any more and the pen switched to like 10dpi. A bit of digging and I found that the unit I had was just a re-labeled Huion H610, so I grabbed their drivers, which were half a decade newer than the ones on the Monoprice site. Newer graphics, but same end result, spotty pen registration, and now it showed up as a mouse with no pen features. After some further digging I came across OpenTabletDriver and decided to give it a whirl. Uninstalled all the vendor drivers, rebooted for old timey windows sake and installed the open source offering. Bam, everything worked. I had pressure sensitivity, configurable buttons, everything. There is some noise on the input registration, but with how poorly it was working prior its unclear if that was hardware or software… Now back to my main limitation of drawing skills. Damn.
